Even a minor bug can impact your performance score in Google Search Console.
Starting May 13, 2025, you might have noticed improvements in impressions for your pages and search queries. In reality, it was not exactly “the improvement” but inaccurate reporting of impressions due to a logging error in GSC (Google Search Console).
The Google Team recently shared an update confirming that the team is working on the issue, and within the next few weeks, the bug will be removed. As a result, you might start noticing a drop in impressions in the Search Console Performance report.
All businesses and startup companies that have been showing improvement in impressions in console reports for months must be prepared for a bit of a drop in impression score. I recommend sharing this update with your clients so they are also aware of the cause.
The positive aspect is that there was no impact on clicks or other metrics in the performance report.
Past Logging Error Cases
This is not the first time Google has encountered a logging error, resulting in a spike in impression counts in the Search Console. There have been similar incidents in the past:
Between March 28, 2024 -April 2, 2024: Due to logging errors, websites with AMP pages and the one showcasing web stories in Google Images noticed a drop in clicks and impressions.
Between May 15, 2024 – May 27, 2024: Many businesses noticed an increase in clicks and impressions for the Product snippet search appearance type in the search console report due to a logging error.
